History

YourSkin was founded by Adam Jackson a lifelong psoriasis sufferer and experienced clinician and researcher into natural health natural health practitioner. "Too often people feel isolated. Many skin problems are chronic and people are unhappy using hydrocortisone and other drug therapies over a long period due to the associated side effects of those treatments. It is not easy to get reliable information on the available effective, natural treatments. GPs often don't have the time (or the inclination!) to be able to keep up with the latest developments, especially related to alternative and complementary medicines and natural skin care. Too many times patients are told 'to learn to live with it'. I remember as a 14 year old boy, hospitalised with over 80 per cent of my body covered with psoriasis, hearing the consultant shouting at a female patient from Malaysia in the adjacent room. It turned out she hadn't eaten her lunch because, so she said, lamb always made her skin worse. The consultant told her that the food couldn't affect her skin and she should be grateful for what she was given. (Today, research confirms the lady was, in fact, correct - high fatty foods such as lamb contain arachidonic acid which can irritate all inflammatory conditions and furthermore, studies have shown that psoriasis sufferers tend to have problems metabolising saturated fats).

"After 6 weeks of intensive treatment including pastes and coal tar baths and being wrapped up in cling film, I was sat down by a nurse and told that I would probably have to go back every year. That moment changed my life and from that time I researched to find ways in which I could keep my skin clear and avoid having to go back to hospital.

"After qualifying as a lawyer I retrained in a number of complementary therapies and also wrote a monthly column containing research updates for the Nursing Times and Health Guardian. My hope is that YourSkin will offer help and hope to fellow skin sufferers."
