Chickweed ( stellaria spp.)


Chickweed is probably the most common of the weeds, growing in virtually all corners of the world. It was traditionally used to heal wounds and in poultices for boils.

The aerial parts of the plant are used today in eczema creams and for skin irritations. They are also traditionally used internally as a cleansing diuretic and tonic for rheumatic pains.

Mucilage, saponins, silica, minerals, vitamins A, B, C, fatty acids

Character

Chinese herbal medicine regards it as sweet, moist and cool.


Action

The plant is traditionally used as an astringent, anti-rheumatic, healing wounds and for softening and soothing to inflamed areas, such as gastric mucous membranes.

Application

Decoction This is traditionally used fresh to relieve tiredness and debility, and is also helpful for urinary tract inflammations, such as cystitis.

Tincture This is traditionally prescribed with other remedies for rheumatism.

Poultice This is traditionally used fresh for boils and abscesses and painful joints.

Infused oil This is traditionally prescribed for skin rashes, or 1tablespoon is added to bath water for eczema.
