It is unknown when oats were first introduced to Britain. However, oats are traditionally used as a warm sweet food, served as porridge, it is ideal in the cold climate of Northern Europe. Medicinally, oats are considered a good restorative nerve tonic, ideal for depression and energy deficiency. Research has shown that oatbran can also be useful in reducing high blood cholesterol levels. The parts of the plant used are the oatstraw and grains. Action The oatstraw is traditionally used as an antidepressant, restorative nerve tonic and to promote sweating. As oatbran, it is traditionally used as an antithrombotic and to reduce blood cholesterol levels. Application Oatstraw Fluid extract This has been traditionally used for insomnia, anxiety and depression (2 – 3 ml )and combines well with vervain. Decoction This is traditionally made from the whole dried plant and used for the same conditions as the fluid extract. Grain Poultice This traditionally used as on the skin for eczema,, cold sores and shingles Cautions For those sensitive to gluten, allow the decoction to settle, then decant the clear liquid only for use.
